After the ceremony came the feast, rich and heavy, thick noodles inundated with fish stew and clam sauce, white and garlicky, and when they all were stuffed from that, tons of sugary cakes were served to be munched and washed down with bitter cranberry wine.
After the feast came the Wintermind Ballad.
Corian nodded to Arin as a young woman stepped into the firelight that had been replenished while the company mellowed. She waited before beginning, and a hush settled over Fleeters and guests alike. An undulation stirred the air, so gentle it was felt more than heard, but Corian recognized it.
In the fog,
In the fog.
Chanted over and over till, at last, the lead singer began with the verses Arin already knew. When she reached the chorus that told what little there was to say about the Wintermind, she slowed down and all the Fleeters joined in. The wail on the final repetition of the word “cries” was harrowing.
The woman has a remarkable range, Corian thought. All the way from shrill to a deep, throaty vibrato. And now she came to the verses Arin had not heard him sing.
Well, fifteen ships all set out to sea,
And fifteen crews left the shore,
But stormclouds blew and the gulls flew free,
And many a sailor never lived to see
The sun sail the skies once more,
The sun sail the skies once more.
And when the waters no longer rolled,
But shone in the early dawn
Like a lawn of green that is tainted gold,
Only fourteen ships could be seen, I’m told,
Cos the fifteenth ship was gone,
Yes, the fifteenth ship was gone
